The international furore surrounding Caster Semenya’s gender shows no sign of abating. Our previous issue had barely hit the shelves when an Australian newspaper claimed that gender tests done on the young 800 m athlete by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) showed she had both male and female sexual characteristics. In other words she’s intersex.
This week we speak exclusively to Caster’s bewildered mom, Dorcas, who showed us her daughter’s medals (which she keeps in a piece of plastic in her humble home) and poured out her heart about her fears for Caster’s future. She also expressed her anger at the way in which she has been treated. Dorcas is pointing fingers at the IAAF and Athletics South Africa (ASA) and demands answers - and she’s absolutely right to do so. The incompetence with which these athletics bodies have handled the issue is nothing short of scandalous. The Semenya family, South Africa and the world have the right to know exactly what has happened since questions were first raised about this young woman’s gender.
And if those answers are not forthcoming soon, and not entirely believable (we doubt they will be) the ASA leadership should resign. It’s time for all of us to say loudly and clearly: heads should roll.
