A reader recently asked why we don’t carry more positive articles in YOU. We’re so tired of violence, politics, the economy and the gloom and suffering that pervades the country, the reader said. Well, here at YOU we’re always looking for positive stories - and this week I hope we’ve got it right.
Almost every article has a positive angle, whether it’s the fantastic achievements of our Paralympics squad in Beijing or the Pretoria woman who started the website www.donotdatehim.co.za that’s causing a buzz (see both YOU Mobi articles below). Her story certainly is positive - she was beaten and belittled by a man but her website isn’t an act of revenge; rather it’s a way of urging women not to let abusive men get away with detestable behaviour.
Our exclusive extract from the recently published book by Britney Spears’ mom, Lynne, strikes me as positive too. Her family has been through hell but they’ve come out okay and Britney is reconciled with her parents.
Jacob Zuma isn’t someone who makes me feel too positive but, hey, the experts we quote don’t think he’ll be that bad as president. That has to be positive!
Then there’s the story that has inspired South Africans across the country: evangelist Angus Buchan recently drew a huge crowd to Newlands in Cape Town to hear him deliver his message of renewal in his inimitable way.
