I never miss the singing of the anthem before big sports events so when Ras Dumisani made such a hash of it in Toulouse I suffered through it, excruciating note by excruciating note. And for the first time in years I missed the start of a rugby Test because we replayed Ras’ gobsmacking performance - and screamed with laughter at the total disbelief on some Bok faces - way into the first 20 minutes. Thank goodness for PVR.
One good thing that has followed the national outrage and indignation about the debacle is a new sense of pride in our anthem. Yet so many of us still don’t know the words. So in this week’s print issue we show you how to pronounce each syllable and share with you some interesting facts about the origins of our hauntingly beautiful anthem. Here’s the challenge: let no camera catch any South Africans mumbling their way through a single phrase come World Cup 2010! Now I wonder when Nando’s are going to bring us a Ras Dumisani ad . . .
